A slipping or shuddering clutch never fixes itself. It only gets more expensive. Our master mechanics replace clutches and dual-mass flywheels on European and prestige cars at five inner-city Brisbane workshops, with transparent pricing and every job backed by our workmanship guarantee.
Factory-trained technicians and master-mechanics

Your clutch is a wear item, like brake pads: a friction plate clamped between the engine and gearbox that takes up drive every time you pull away or change gear. How long one lasts depends almost entirely on driving conditions: anywhere from 60,000 km in stop-start city traffic to well over 150,000 km on the highway. Many modern European cars also use a dual-mass flywheel (DMF) that cushions the driveline; it wears too, and on higher-kilometre cars it is often replaced with the clutch so the job is done once, properly.
Book a clutch check if you notice any of the following. Caught early, you can plan the job instead of being towed in:
Engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate to match, most obvious uphill or when overtaking.
The car judders as you pull away, especially on hill starts, often a contaminated or worn friction plate.
The clutch grabs right at the top of the pedal travel, a classic sign the friction material is near the end.
A pedal that suddenly feels heavier, lighter or inconsistent points to the release bearing or hydraulics.
If gears crunch or baulk going in, the clutch may not be releasing fully (dragging).
A sharp, acrid smell after hills or heavy traffic is friction material overheating. Do not ignore it.
Clutch pricing varies more than almost any other repair, because the gearbox-out labour differs so much between models, and because many modern European cars pair the clutch with a dual-mass flywheel that is often replaced at the same time. Clutch hydraulics are best done while everything is apart.
The road test, inspection and a fixed written quote are free: you will know the exact cost for your vehicle before we touch anything. If your car has an S tronic, DSG or other dual-clutch automated transmission, that is a different system: we service those too, so talk to us about the symptoms you are seeing.

1. Road test and diagnosis: We confirm the clutch is actually the problem, since gearbox mounts, hydraulics and shift linkages can mimic clutch faults for a fraction of the cost.
2. Gearbox out: The transmission is removed to access the clutch. This is where most of the labour in the job lives.
3. Inspect while it is open: Flywheel (including DMF play), rear main seal, release mechanism and gearbox input shaft are all checked while access is easy. Anything that needs attention, we photograph and quote before touching it.
4. Quality parts fitted: A complete new kit (cover, friction plate and release bearing) from OE-quality brands, plus the flywheel where needed.
5. Bleed, adjust and road test: Hydraulics bled, engagement checked, and a proper road test before you get the keys back.

Brisbane European car servicing by qualified master mechanics that works for you and your schedule.

Most clutch replacements are a full workshop day; some transverse and all-wheel-drive layouts run longer. Plan on the car being with us for one to two days, and we'll give you a firm timeframe when we quote.
Anywhere from 60,000 km to well over 150,000 km. City driving, hill starts, towing and riding the clutch all shorten its life; highway kilometres barely wear it at all.
We don't recommend it. Once a clutch starts slipping it deteriorates quickly: slipping generates heat, heat accelerates wear, and a failed clutch can leave you stranded and can damage the flywheel, turning a clutch job into a clutch-and-flywheel job.
Not always, but we always inspect it while the gearbox is out. Dual-mass flywheels on higher-kilometre European cars often have enough wear to justify replacing them at the same time. The labour is already paid for, so doing it later means paying to remove the gearbox twice. We'll show you the measurements and let you decide.
Usually, yes. A clutch replacement is almost always far cheaper than changing cars, and on a European vehicle that is otherwise well maintained it can add years of service life. If we think the car is not worth the spend, we'll tell you that too.
